The Oltiasika Diocesan Development Centre is home to several water tanks that play a vital role in supplying clean water to the surrounding rural community. Two 100m³ tanks are connected to the Centre’s store and office building, designed to fill sequentially through a roof-catchment system. Rainwater is first channelled into the initial tank; once full, the overflow moves into the second.
However, before this project, the first tank had suffered significant structural damage. The resulting leaks meant it could no longer hold water, preventing it from filling fully. As a consequence, the connected tank could not receive water, leaving the community without the storage capacity they desperately needed.

For a community of approximately 3,000 people, this loss of accessible clean water created ongoing hardship, particularly during dry seasons. Restoring the system was essential to strengthening water security and improving daily life.
To address the issue, the damaged first tank was utilised as a structural shell. A new ferro-cement tank was constructed within it, effectively replacing the compromised tank while keeping costs and materials economical. This restored tank is now fully functional and watertight.
Together, these improvements have increased total clean water storage capacity to 200,000 litres, significantly enhancing the Centre’s ability to supply safe drinking water to the surrounding community.

The successful repair of the Oltiasika tank system has unlocked 200,000 litres of safe, clean drinking water for approximately 3,000 people. Shortly after completion, the rains arrived and half-filled the tank — a moment of immense joy and relief for the community, who could finally draw clean water close to home once again. This outcome will make a meaningful difference in daily life, health, resilience during dry periods, and the overall wellbeing of the community.
